Rain, formerly Reign, will be starting their nationwide tour “A Tribute to The Beatles” in Wilmington and ending in LA. The Beatles' last concert performance was in 1966. Rio De Janeiro Beats Out Chicago For 2016 Summer Olympics

Turns out the IOC just doesn't appreciate The Windy City like most of us would. Despite tireless pleas from President Barack Obama, Rio De Janeiro was awarded the 2016 Summer Olympics over Chicago. This makes it the first South American city ever awarded the games and sends Chicago and other would-be Olympic hosts back to the drawing board to try and woo the X-Games instead. Too bad for those of us that would have made the trek to Illinois to watch all of the events that are worth the four-year wait to see like gymnastics and basketball and the other events. Even worse for the rest of the world that might not ever taste deep-dish pizza like the ones you can find in Chicago. Kimbo Slice Loses Again, Needs To Move

Kimbo Slice's latest attempt to make a career in the octagon of the UFC might have been his last as he was pinned to the ground twice in two rounds and pummeled to the point that the referee had to stop the fight and award a technical knockout victory to Roy Nelson, ending Kimbo's journey in The Ultimate Fighter. Well, maybe not. At the end of last night's show, UFC owner Dana White teased that Kimbo might just have another chance if another fighter bows out or gets hurt, probably more in order to try and get us to watch Kimbo and his beard dominate the air time at the TUF house. But seriously, that Kimbo fight sort of sucked if you're a Kimbo fan. I personally wanted to see him go on and fight some more, but for the third time in his last three actual matches, Kimbo got rocked -- even though he somehow won that one against the guy with the ear. But now, Kimbo should really consider moving out and giving up his MMA career. And you know we could supply him with a discount on his move out of the house. Washington Wizards guard DeShawn Stevenson's name probably won't appear often in this space except when he has tattoos that are newsworthy all over his face and neck, which he did. A rumor floating around the office is claiming that he did it just to get on to the Starving Students blog, but that might be a stretch. But he did get some serious tattoos around his neck and some on his face, too, which seems really painful. Almost as painful as getting destroyed by Lebron James each year, but that doesn't stop the shooting guard from talking trash to King James each time they play. And for some reason the tattoo around DeShawn's neck resembles a five-dollar bill. Why a five dollar bill and not a ten or twenty or hundred? We have no idea. Toyota Issues The Biggest Safety Recall In History

Toyota will be recalling at least 3.8 million Lexuses (Lexi?) and Toyotas due to the floor mat potentially causing the accelerator to get jammed, which could lead to a nasty accident that no one would believe. Can you imagine having to tell someone that you got into an accident because the floor mat causing the gas pedal to get stuck which caused you to rear-end that Starving Students truck in front of you. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is uring people to immediately turn their cars over to their local dealership or take the more drastic measure of removing their floor mats to save themselves from getting into a potential accident. The affected vehicles include 2007-2010 Camry, 2005-2010 Avalon, 2004-2009 Prius, 2005-2010 Tacoma, 2007-2010 Tundra, 2007-2010 Lexus ES 350 and 2006-2010 Lexus IS 250 and IS350. My advice? Instead of focusing on the family life of the Gosselin clan, the show's conquest will instead follow the journeys of the semi-single mom as she raises her brood. From what I hear though, part of the fun of the original incarnation of the show was watching the couple bicker amongst each other. Now onlookers will have to find a new way to find entertainment as Kate and her eight children tackle life with a little less Jon in their lives. Approximately 2% of the fun of watching the Emmy's last night came from watching Neil Patrick Harris. And from what I'm hearing, Blake Lively got the most buzz for her red dress she wore to the event while Leighton Meester also got some notice for her white outfit that had people talking, too. What had me buzzing was watching the New York Giants take on the Dallas Cowboys in the Cowboys' new stadium. That sucker looks nice. It's got windows and seats and everything. I have a friend who I talk to every once in a while that takes a flight from Los Angeles to Dallas at least eight times a year because he has season tickets. That's a pretty dedicated fan. Bryon Russell Challenges Michael Jordan

A lot of people that I knew were fans of Michael Jordan growing up. It almost got to the point that you couldn't walk more than a block or so without seeing the familiar red #23 jersey with the word "Jordan" on the back of it. And don't get me wrong -- I enjoyed watching His Airness play, too. He transcended the game in so many ways, creating shots out of nowhere, dunking with a combination of elegance and power that no one had exhibited before and his game influenced millions of youngsters around the world who practiced his moves on the playground day after day. However one person who is no longer a fan is Bryon Russell. You might remember Russell as the man tasked with guarding Jordan during the battles between Utah and Chicago in the Finals -- particularly the play where Jordan (conveniently moving him out of the way with his off-hand) hit a jumper over Russell to give them the championship in what should have been Jordan's last game, But now, offended by Jordan's Hall of Fame speech, Russell is challenging Jordan to a game of one-on-one to help settle the score. Apparently the Cal State Long Beach alum was offended by Jordan's speech in which Jordan mentioned where his motivation came to dominate opponents and Russell is challenging Jordan to come out to California to play a game of one-on-one, which Russell obviously feels as though he'll win. Brian Urlacher Out For The Season

The NFL season got underway this past weekend and while there were many stories that came out of the exciting season openers, perhaps the biggest news was that Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher is out for the season due to a dislocated right wrist, an injury that he suffered in their opening season loss to the Green Bay Packers Sunday night. The Pro Bowl linebacker's injury is a striking blow to a Bears team that had high expectations following the acquisition of quarterback Jay Cutler this past offseason. Hef Set To Divorce After 20 Years

I'm sure I've read this somewhere before, but Hugh Hefner is married. And not to any of The Girls Next Door. Nope, it's too another woman to whom he's been married for more than 20 years, 11 of which have been estranged or separated. His wife, Kimberley Conrad, a former Playboy model has been living in a house next door to the Playboy Mansion since the pair split amicably 11 years ago. But the real news here isn't that, whoa, Hef is married, but that they've finally made the decision to divorce. So after 11 years of separation, Hef woke up and decided it was finally time to get to them divorce papers. Partly because he's probably got another relationship going on, but also partly because he fell on hard times and sold Conrad's house. Now she's saying that Hef owes her $5 million for selling that house and Hef's getting back at her by divorcing her. Helpful Hints For Your First Day of School

The first day of school was always very intimidating to me. I was always afraid of what the kids were going to say to me or who would be in my class or how much everyone had changed over the long, but way too quick, summer break. Because as a child, my summer days were spent relaxing, watching television, playing video games or sleeping. I didn't really get outside much and enjoyed watching The Price is Right or whatever talk show was on at the time. I think Sally Jessie Raphael was big back then, but honestly it's been so long I don't remember. But once time arose to head back to school, the nerves would start up for me. But the American Academy of Pediatrics has some helpful tips for kids heading back to school: MAKING THE FIRST DAY EASIER

Remind your child that she is not the only student who is a bit uneasy about the first day of school. Teachers know that students are anxious and will make an extra effort to make sure everyone feels as comfortable as possible.
Point out the positive aspects of starting school: It will be fun. She'll see old friends and meet new ones. Refresh her positive memories about previous years, when she may have returned home after the first day with high spirits because she had a good time.
Find another child in the neighborhood with whom your youngster can walk to school or ride with on the bus.
If you feel it is appropriate, drive your child (or walk with her) to school and pick her up on the first day.

BACKPACK SAFETY

Choose a backpack with wide, padded shoulder straps and a padded back.
Pack light. Organize the backpack to use all of its compartments. Pack heavier items closest to the center of the back. The backpack should never weigh more than 10 to 20 percent of the your child’s body weight.
Always use both shoulder straps. Slinging a backpack over one shoulder can strain muscles.
Consider a rolling backpack. This type of backpack may be a good choice for students who must tote a heavy load. Remember that rolling backpacks still must be carried up stairs, and they may be difficult to roll in snow.

TRAVELING TO AND FROM SCHOOL Review the basic rules with your youngster: School Bus

If your child’s school bus has lap/shoulder seat belts, make sure your child uses one at all times when in the bus. If your child’s school bus does not have lap/shoulder belts, encourage the school to buy or lease buses with lap/shoulder belts.
Wait for the bus to stop before approaching it from the curb.
Do not move around on the bus.
Check to see that no other traffic is coming before crossing.
Make sure to always remain in clear view of the bus driver.
Children should always board and exit the bus at locations that provide safe access to the bus or to the school building.

Car

All passengers should wear a seat belt and/or an age- and size-appropriate car safety seat or booster seat.
Your child should ride in a car safety seat with a harness as long as possible and then ride in a belt-positioning booster seat. Your child is ready for a booster seat when she has reached the top weight or height allowed for her seat, her shoulders are above the top harness slots, or her ears have reached the top of the seat.
Your child should ride in a belt-positioning booster seat until the vehicle's seat belt fits properly (usually when the child reaches about 4' 9" in height and is between 8 to 12 years of age). This means that the child is tall enough to sit against the vehicle seat back with her legs bent at the knees and feet hanging down and the shoulder belt lies across the middle of the chest and shoulder, not the neck or throat; the lap belt is low and snug across the thighs, and not the stomach.
All children under 13 years of age should ride in the rear seat of vehicles. If you must drive more children than can fit in the rear seat (when carpooling, for example), move the front-seat passenger’s seat as far back as possible and have the child ride in a booster seat if the seat belts do not fit properly without it.
Remember that many crashes occur while novice teen drivers are going to and from school. You should require seat belt use, limit the number of teen passengers, do not allow eating, drinking, cell phone conversations or texting to prevent driver distraction; and limit nighttime driving and driving in inclement weather. Familiarize yourself with your state’s graduated driver license law and consider the use of a parent-teen driver agreement to facilitate the early driving learning process.

Bike

Always wear a bicycle helmet, no matter how short or long the ride.
Ride on the right, in the same direction as auto traffic.
Use appropriate hand signals.
Respect traffic lights and stop signs.
Wear bright color clothing to increase visibility.
Know the "rules of the road."

Walking to School

Make sure your child's walk to a school is a safe route with well-trained adult crossing guards at every intersection.
Be realistic about your child's pedestrian skills. Because small children are impulsive and less cautious around traffic, carefully consider whether or not your child is ready to walk to school without adult supervision.
If your child is young or is walking to new school, walk with them the first week to make sure they know the route and can do it safely.
Bright colored clothing will make your child more visible to drivers.
In neighborhoods with higher levels of traffic, consider starting a “walking school bus,” in which an adult accompanies a group of neighborhood children walking to school.

EATING DURING THE SCHOOL DAY

Most schools regularly send schedules of cafeteria menus home. With this advance information, you can plan on packing lunch on the days when the main course is one your child prefers not to eat.
Try to get your child's school to stock healthy choices such as fresh fruit, low-fat dairy products, water and 100 percent fruit juice in the vending machines.
Each 12-ounce soft drink contains approximately 10 teaspoons of sugar and 150 calories. Drinking just one can of soda a day increases a child's risk of obesity by 60%. Restrict your child's soft drink consumption.

BULLYING

Bullying is when one child picks on another child repeatedly. Bullying can be physical, verbal, or social. It can happen at school, on the playground, on the school bus, in the neighborhood, or over the Internet.

When Your Child Is Bullied

Help your child learn how to respond by teaching your child how to:

1. Look the bully in the eye. 2. Stand tall and stay calm in a difficult situation. 3. Walk away.

Teach your child how to say in a firm voice. "I don't like what you are doing."

"Please do NOT talk to me like that."
"Why would you say that?"

Teach your child when and how to ask for help.
Encourage your child to make friends with other children.
Support activities that interest your child.
Alert school officials to the problems and work with them on solutions.
Make sure an adult who knows about the bullying can watch out for your child's safety and well-being when you cannot be there.

When Your Child Is the Bully

Be sure your child knows that bullying is never OK.
Set firm and consistent limits on your child's aggressive behavior.
Be a positive role mode. Show children they can get what they want without teasing, threatening or hurting someone.
Use effective, non-physical discipline, such as loss of privileges.
Develop practical solutions with the school principal, teachers, counselors, and parents of the children your child has bullied.

When Your Child Is a Bystander

Tell your child not to cheer on or even quietly watch bullying.
Encourage your child to tell a trusted adult about the bullying.
Help your child support other children who may be bullied. Encourage your child to include these children in activities.
Encourage your child to join with others in telling bullies to stop.

BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CHILD CARE

During middle childhood, youngsters need supervision. A responsible adult should be available to get them ready and off to school in the morning and watch over them after school until you return home from work.
Children approaching adolescence (11- and 12-year-olds) should not come home to an empty house in the afternoon unless they show unusual maturity for their age.
If alternate adult supervision is not available, parents should make special efforts to supervise their children from a distance. Children should have a set time when they are expected to arrive at home and should check in with a neighbor or with a parent by telephone.
If you choose a commercial after-school program, inquire about the training of the staff. There should be a high staff-to-child ratio, and the rooms and the playground should be safe.

DEVELOPING GOOD HOMEWORK AND STUDY HABITS

Create an environment that is conducive to doing homework. Youngsters need a permanent work space in their bedroom or another part of the home that offers privacy.
Set aside ample time for homework.
Establish a household rule that the TV set stays off during homework time.
Supervise computer and internet use.
Be available to answer questions and offer assistance, but never do a child's homework for her.
Take steps to help alleviate eye fatigue, neck fatigue and brain fatigue while studying. It may be helpful to close the books for a few minutes, stretch, and take a break periodically when it will not be too disruptive.
If your child is struggling with a particular subject, and you aren't able to help her yourself, a tutor can be a good solution. Talk it over with your child's teacher first.

USC Moves Up AP Rankings -- UCLA Should Be Higher

If you're a college football fan, chances are your Labor Day was that much more enjoyable because this past weekend was a great weekend to watch some good games. Around the Los Angeles area, the University of Southern California is one of the more popular teams. In fact, many would argue that they are Los Angeles' lone professional football team since our beloved Raiders left. And that still hurts. A friend of mine and I made the trip up to watch the Raiders play a home game in Oakland last year and had a lot of fun. Of course, it'd be a lot more fun if the United States' second-largest market actually had a professional football team. What's up with that? But back to college football ... USC is great according to my friends and wife who actually like that school. Oakland Univeristy Strike Keeps Students From Going Back To School

Remember when you would head to school and hope the professor wouldn't show up so you could just relax around your college or university or even go home for the day or evening? We used to even have that 15 minute rule where if the teacher didn't show up within15 minutes of class starting, we could skip class. A lot of students think that's a rule and I've never been convinced that it is or isn't. All I know is that we would start checking our watches more frequently as that magical 15 minute mark approached. But what if they never showed up again and you wouldn't get credit for that class? Well that's the prospect that students at Oakland University are facing. Apparently a strike over pay (which seems to be the impetus behind most labor disputes) is the main culprit here, as well as the number of faculty members. And because this has become such an issue that it might cause classes for the whole semester to be cancelled unless the administration and faculty can decide on terms to get them back into the classrooms. Until then, school's out for Oakland University. But because the teachers are smart, a lot of them are sending assignments to their would-be students over e-mail in the hopes that this matter gets settled soon. Administration sent an e-mail to the students letting them know that they could show up for class but were free to leave if the teacher didn't show up by, yup, you guessed it, 15 minutes after the scheduled start!!! One thing my wife and I disagree on is how many kids we want to have. I want one whereas she wants two. We'll probably settle on two because I wisely defer to my wife on all important decisions. I would love to ask Jim Bob that. You see, he's the husband of Michelle Duggar, who's expecting child number 19 with Jim Bob. Disney Buys Marvel For $4 Billion

After 26 Years, Reading Rainbow Cancelled

"Take a look, it's in a book ... ". Most of you know the words to the song if you grew up watching Reading Rainbow and after 26 wonderful years, the show is coming to an end. The 26 years the show was on the air made it the third-longest for a television show behind Sesame Street and Mister Rogers Neighborhood. The show starred LeVar Burton who came to prominence starring in Roots and later in Star Trek: The Next Generation, though many of us will remember him as the host of the children's show that encouraged us to read. NYC Skinny House For Sale

As you can imagine with nearly one million moves over the course of our 36 years of service, we've seen many things. We've seen pretty much every type of condo, apartment and house you can imagine and we've moved offices of all sorts. Ryan Jenkins Forces Reality Show Cancels

I think I've written this before, but I'm a sucker for VH-1's slew of reality shows. I watched all of the Flava of Love shows and enoyed the I Love New York shows, too, but another one of my favorites was I Love Money. I enjoy athletic competitions and that show, while goofy at times, is a serious guilty pleasure for me. I love seeing some of the old reality show contestants trying to tackle insane obstacles based on scenarios from previous reality shows. If you haven't seen the show, it's sort of hard to explain it but check this out to read a more detailed analysis of the program. Nintendo Wii Recalls

Owning a Wii can lead to hours of fun. We just got Wii Resort and man is that thing addicting. Paula Abdul Decides To Leave American Idol -- Shuns Simon

Longtime American Idol judge Paula Abdul has announced that she won't be returning to the massively-popular talent show for the ninth season, making the annoucement via Twitter. Abdul leaves the show with just three remaining judges -- Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi, along with host Ryan Seacrest -- all of whom have signed contracts for the show's ninth season. Paula Abdul has had a long career spanning across multiple media, including a stint as a Laker Girl, a much-acclaimed singer and her latest stint as a judge on American Idol. Abdul, who has been on the show since it first began in 2002, reportedly turned down an eight-figure deal that represented a 30 percent raise over her previous contract. She hasn't released a statement indicating why she's leaving the deal. Shaq Versus Show Steals Monday Night RAW

Growing up, Shaquille O'Neal was one of my favorite basketball players. In fact, he probably was my favorite player. When Orlando made him the number one overall pick in the 1992 NBA draft (one of the greatest draft classes of all time), I instantly became a Magic fan. The big man out of LSU quickly became one of the league's biggest attractions with his show-stopping game, which featured very little outside of dunks, and charm and wit off the court. So paired with my love of wrestling, there was little else I wanted to do last night than watch Shaq take on Monday Night RAW in Washington, D.C. Shaq's wit was apparent from the opening sequence and he verbally sparred with Chris Jericho, one of wrestling's best heels (bad guys), who brought out his tag team partner -- The Big Show. Big Show is, well, big. He's listed at 7'1" tall and in the neighborhood of 440 pounds or so. And standing up next to Shaq, he definitely appeared to be that big -- though probably not quite that tall. The main event of the evening featured Shaq and Show squaring off, with the Cleveland Cavaliers center getting the best of it at the end, leaving fans happy with the celebrity host's participation in the night's activities. Penn State Takes Nation's Top Party School Honors, Just Beating U of Florida

Penn State has been named the top party school of 2009 by The Princeton Review. The home of the Nittany Lions has wrestled the top spot from The University of Florida, which placed second this year and also ironically took the top spot in the category of Best Career School. The University of Mississippi took third place in this year's rankings, which polls 122,000 students at the 371 best colleges placed by The Princeton Review. Penn State has been named on the list for the past seven years, previously finishing as high as third in 2008. This is the first time that the school has nabbed the top spot, however. Proving that school administrators know how to ruin a good thing, Penn State spokeswoman Anne Marie Mountz was quoted as saying, "There are about 10 sites I found on Facebook urging students to vote and make Penn State the No. 1 party school, which shows that these rankings are nothing more than a popularity contest." In addition to being named second in rated top party school by The Princeton Review, the school also placed highly in the U.S. News & World Report's ranking of academic programs including in engineering, which has proven to be a highly lucrative major. Selig's review of the case has pumped new life into Rose's once seemingly impossible journey to make it into the Cooperstown building where the baseball hall of fame is located. If Selig decides to let Rose into the Hall, his induction would have to be certified by the 65 members of the Hall of Fame that make up the Veterans Committee, since Rose has surpassed the 15 years post-retirement eligibility to be voted in on the writer's ballot. Pete Rose is Major League Baseball's all-time hit leader with 4,256 hits, which he spread out over his illustrious and amazing 24 season career. He was banned after an investigation revealed that he had gambled on sports while managing the Cincinnati Reds. He has since lobbied several times to be eligible for induction into the Hall of Fame to no avail. However Selig's review could reinstate Rose, making him eligible to be voted into the Hall of Fame. One of Pete Rose's nicknames during his playing career was "Charlie Hustle" for his fortitude and determination during the games which wouldn't let him slow down when playing, even resulting in one of the most famous collisions in baseball history when he bowled over Ray Fosse at home plate in 1970's all-star game.
